Oriental Bay (after Derain)

I wouldn’t argue with a Fauvist tag on some of my work, although I’m not yet nearly as bold in brushstroke or composition or leaving bare areas as they were. I had a theory for some time that some of them were colour blind – perhaps not, but it worked as motivation.
Derain is a favourite, I think because he uses simple colours and contrasts – this is an adaption of one of his paintings of the London Embankment applied to Oriental Bay, the “Wellington Riviera” as estate agents would have it. I like this one, but no-one else seems to – perhaps you need to like Derain. Oil on canvas 12″x12″
