Cass 2025 (after Rita Angus)

Cass 2025, my update/tribute to Rita Angus’s wonderful painting from 1936 – if you asked 10 New Zealanders for their top10 NZ modern paintings, her Cass would be in 8 lists I reckon. Cass is at the foot of the Southern Alps where the Canterbury Plains hit the mountains and the harsh river gorges cutting through west to Greymouth. Her 1936 station was busier with a large platform and workshed, timber and passengers going to Christchurch – nowdays it’s quiet, the rural population has largely dispersed as with other rural areas in the “first world”, Europe, Australia, Canada , Japan, USA, and the road has taken over, for better or worse.

I like this sky, it feels like a classic Canterbury spring norwester (fohn) wind. Oils 600x900mm
