Cass is at the foot of the Southern Alps where the Canterbury Plains hits the mountains. Road and rail from Christchurch funnels west from here to Greymouth through Arthur’s Pass and the harsh and scenic Otira Gorge. I’ve painted and drawn this view maybe 10 times in different media after seeing it in my rearview mirror on a 1986 road trip.
Also my update on Rita Angus’s wonderful 1936 painting of Cass Railway Station, as revisited on a 2020 road trip, ://alistairsart.com/2025/08/06/cass-2025-after-rita-angus/
